![]() ![]() “Questions about our existence are infinitely interesting to me. Little by little through that story the idea of what Dust was became clearer and clearer, but I always wanted to return to it and discover more. The idea of Dust suffused His Dark Materials. ![]() Questions about that mysterious and troubling substance were already causing strife 10 years before His Dark Materials, and at the centre of The Book of Dust is the struggle between a despotic and totalitarian organisation, which wants to stifle speculation and enquiry, and those who believe thought and speech should be free. Pullman continues: “…why return to Lyra’s world? Dust. ![]() Also, of course, there are some characters who are new to us, including an ordinary boy (a boy we have seen in an earlier part of Lyra’s story, if we were paying attention) who, with Lyra, is caught up in a terrifying adventure that takes him into a new world. It’s a different story, but there are settings that readers of His Dark Materials will recognise, and characters they’ve met before. It doesn’t stand before or after His Dark Materials, but beside it. “…is it a prequel? Is it a sequel? It’s neither,” writes Pullam. The new series will include characters readers will be familiar with as well as creations such as alethimeters, daemons, and the Magisterium. Writing via his website, Pullman explains that the first two volumes feature heroine Lyra Belacqua in two periods of her life – as a child and 10 years following the climax of His Dark Materials. ![]()

![]() ![]() Where lays the “collective responsibility” of the tribe when it inflicts trauma and suffering for a flaw that is beyond human control? Can disability activism reduce the pain of a barren woman? The acceptance and change in the gaze of the society might create an ambience conducive for her survival. We cannot stay separate from our body and the same body can betray, break, mutate, get damaged and disabled at the same time. Throughout our lives we have an unavoidable relationship with the stuff that is our body. We grow, evolve and transform as it grows, evolves and transforms. ![]() Are the norms worth the stolid grief that the women suffer after being labeled, ‘a barren woman’? We are bodies and our bodies are ourselves. : Femininity, Womanliness and Motherhood are normative in nature, norms that are suggestive and get reflected consciously or unconsciously through words, gaze, attitude modes of acceptance and non-acceptance causing fear resulting in conflicts, speculations on being ostracized, traumas and certain truths of social abnegation. ![]() ![]() ![]() The "goon squad" of the title is not itself a reference to The Sopranos: there are no mobsters here. ![]() This is a difficult book to summarise, but a delight to read, gradually distilling a medley out of its polyphonic, sometimes deliberately cacophonous voices. It is neither a novel nor a collection of short stories, but something in between: a series of chapters featuring interlocking characters at different points in their lives, whose individual voices combine to a create a symphonic work that uses its interconnected form to explore ideas about human interconnectedness. That shouldn't make sense but it does: Goon Squad is a book about memory and kinship, time and narrative, continuity and disconnection, in which relationships shift and recombine kaleidoscopically. Egan has said that the novel was inspired by two sources: Proust's À la Recherche du Temps Perdu, and HBO's The Sopranos. ![]() The book received rave reviews when it was published in the US last year, and for good reason it has since been named a finalist for several prestigious American prizes. T he title of Jennifer Egan's new novel may make it sound more like an episode of Scooby-Doo than an exceptional rendering of contemporary America, but don't be fooled. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to her fiction work, Watts recently co-edited an anthology of essays, memoirs and stories on the sensitive topic of menstruation titled Women. In Matthew McConaughey’s case, he took it whether it was offered or not. Everyone should be allowed their complexities and unique ability to shine as a human. The world looks at them and thinks there’s not much more to them than that: a pretty face and rockin’ bod. Let’s be real, there are prejudices against everyone, including beautiful people. This is an excessively difficult thing to do in Hollywood, especially for someone so handsome. He purposely almost tanked his career in order to break free from his typecasting as the romcom leading man, something he does outline in his memoir. Earlier ones with the pretty and often brainless leading man? Not so much. There is a brilliance to Matthew McConaughey that isn’t often conveyed in his films. I had been hearing a lot of buzz about this memoir, and after reading it I can see what all the fuss is about. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ash is so patient and honest with Greer, and I truly felt their love was real. Over the course of the summer, Mary Jane introduces her new household to crisply ironed clothes and a family dinner schedule, and has a front-row seat to a liberal world of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll (not to mention group therapy). A framed color photograph of Gerald Ford hangs on their dining room wall, visible over her father’s head as he sits at the head of the table reading the newspaper while his wife and daughter serve the meals. A week after Mary Jane starts, the rock star and his movie star wife move in. Mary Jane is the only child of a conventional Republican father and a humorless, church-going homemaker mother. ![]() And even more troublesome (were Mary Jane’s mother to know, which she does not): The doctor is a psychiatrist who has cleared his summer for one important job-helping a famous rock star dry out. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. In 1970s Baltimore, fourteen-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Show Tunes of the Month record club. ![]() |
